Sick Puppy

October 5, 2015

Sometimes you have meetings scheduled, and coffee dates planned, and errands to run and meals to cook.  There's always rooms to clean, bills to pay, stories to write.  Then something shows up on that To-Do list like the nagging cough that it is.  Wait just a minute! Croup wasn't on the To-Do list!!

Staying home all day to snuggle and watch Disney movies means that something is going to slip through the cracks. It feels against the plan.  But you know what? Screw the plan.

Remember how fun sick days were (well, when you weren't throwing up or drifting in and out of a fever induced haze)?  It was special time with mom, a chance to drink ginger ale and watch episode afer episode of 'Just the Ten of Us' and 'Facts of Life'.  It meant popsicles for breakfast, milkshakes for lunch and jello for dinner.  Even more golden, it was protection from siblings, "don't bother her, she's not feeling well."

As one of four kids, this kind of private attention and coddling was rare.  Even now, with just two kids I rarely get to have the one on one time with my girls.  Two weeks ago, only Tiny was sick so we sent Teeny to school as planned and Tiny and I took the week off.

We watched movie after movie...unapologetically.  We ate ice cream.  We painted our toe nails, we took naps in the middle of the day, in the middle of the family room.

Being sick is the worst.  Like most of motherhood it's disgusting and snot covered, it'll keep you up in the middle of the night, it craps on your plans.  But, when you stop making plans and just look for joy in the tiny moments....you can find sweetness even in the sniffles.

And then the fever breaks and it's back to choke-holding sis.
